B_Ginner Beekeeping Workshop 2026

(A Hybrid Course: Virtual Lectures and One Day Hands on in the Field)

The Saskatchewan Beekeepers Development Commission (SBDC) and Tech Adaptation Program in a partnership with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture – Apiculture Program are pleased to offer the B_Ginners Beekeeping Certificate Course encompassing four virtual sessions on Zoom. This workshop will provide you with the basic knowledge to successfully set up and manage a honey bee colony.  One additional day for in person hands on and learning field practices during the bee season is included. (One field day will be in Saskatoon area and one field day will be in Regina). Students who successfully pass this course will receive a certificate from SBDC that meets requirements towards a beekeeping license application in many areas.

Our excellent professional instructors include; Mr. Geoff Wilson – Provincial Specialist in Apiculture, Mr. Graham Parsons – Biosecurity Specialist, Mr. Simon Lalonde – Commercial Beekeeper, Co-owner of “Lalonde’s Honey Farms” bee supplies and President of SBDC, and Dr. Medhat Nasr – SBDC- Tech Adaptation Program Lead.

Workshop lessons include:

  • Basic bee biology
  • Standard beekeeping equipment
  • Honey bee colony assessments
  • Seasonal beekeeping activities and responsibilities
  • Extracting, processing honey and marketing
  • Diseases and pests: diagnoses and management practices
  • What could go wrong as a B_Ginner beekeeper?

Dates & Times:

The course virtual sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two weeks (March 24th, 26st, 31st and April 2nd, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CST.  Tentative date for the field day is May 2nd in Saskatoon area, weather permits.  Date for the field day will be confirmed as we get closer to the dates.

Fee: $190.00. per person. This fee includes the cost of a book: “Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists: Honey Bee Disease and Pests 3rd Edition”, and lunch during the field day.

Recommended book: Beekeeping in Western Canada. Available for addition fees, $27.99 plus shipping and GST.
